The BDMA (British Damage Management Association) has published two new documents to complement its earlier information leaflet ‘Understanding Basic Flood Recovery Procedures’. These are aimed at providing further support to victims at different stages of the recovery cycle.
The BDMA Self Help Sheet sets out a number of things victims themselves can do in the immediate aftermath of flooding without prejudicing any potential insurance claim. Removing some of the bewilderment people feel by giving them a degree of control over their situation helps to counteract the feelings of helplessness and uncertainty flood victims experience while awaiting advice from insurers or loss adjusters. The information also outlines ways of delaying deterioration of properties and contents.
The Record of Flood Recovery Activity will assist victims of flooding to keep a record of work carried out if they are appointing contractors directly, either because they are not covered by insurance or by agreement with their insurer. There is also space to record the contractors’ details and contact information. The ability to keep track of recovery activity gives flood victims confidence that the recovery of their property is progressing satisfactorily and allows them to identify any areas of concern.
Additionally, this leaflet will help to avoid pressure from unscrupulous workmen as competent professional contractors will be happy to provide the information requested. All three documents are available free for distribution by local authorities and other relevant agencies and can be ordered online at www.bdma.org.uk
