Pedestrian areas blighted by discarded and trodden down chewing gum are being given a new lease of life, thanks to a cleaning technique that’s completely environment friendly.
Market Harborough-based Gum Blast UK is using dry ice to successfully remove the chewing gum menace from public area surfaces. Dry ice cleaning is described by Gum Blast UK, sister company to Ice Blast UK, as ‘a revolution in cleaning and restoration’.
Retail parks, schools, colleges, shopping centres and public spaces have been plagued by discarded chewing gum for decades and despite changes in the law, and increased public awareness, it remains a problem for pedestrians. And its classification as litter means that local authorities have a legal responsibility to remove it, as well as the powers to issue fines to people who don’t discard gum properly.
“During the cleaning process our operatives use dry ice propelled at high speed by compressed air to impact and remove the unwanted gum,” said Gum Blast UK managing director Tremain Jones. “The dry ice particles then evaporate and the surface is completely dry and undamaged, and the waste can then be swept up. In addition to being clean and safe, the dry ice is obtained as a by-product from other industrial processes - it’s made from reclaimed CO2. This is a truly environmentally friendly process.”
