Outdoor areas around the busy Port of Dover are being kept clean and litter free by two RS 501 road sweepers from Nilfisk-Advance.

Connaught Environmental Ltd is using the compact, diesel powered sweepers for round the clock cleaning at the port, from open air food courts to vehicle waiting areas. With its 34 HP/4 cylinder diesel engine, Nilfisk’s RS 501 is claimed to be the most powerful sweeper in its class and a cost-effective solution for this demanding outdoor cleaning contract.

The Port of Dover is one of the world’s busiest drive-on, drive-off terminals and operates at the very heart of the cross-Channel transport network. Over 15 million passengers travel through the port each year and thousands of freight movements are handled to and from Continental Europe every day.
 
Given the high volume of foot and road traffic through the port, outdoor cleaning has to be completed quickly and efficiently, said Claire Dimond, regional director of Connaught Environmental Ltd: “Our team needs to be able to access all areas with the minimum of disruption to travellers and the port authorities. Nilfisk’s RS 501 road sweeper combines excellent mobility with superb sweeping power.

And in addition to discarded paper and other lightweight litter, it can also pick up bottles and cans.

The machine’s high suction power and airflow mean it can collect a wide variety of debris, while the hydraulically operated flap ensures safe intake of larger objects. The RS 501 road sweeper is the only machine of its type which has been specifically designed to prevent debris coming into contact with the fan for increased reliability and performance.

The versatile machine weighs just 1500 kg and has a small wheelbase, so it’s small and light enough to transport from site to site for total contract flexibility. It also features a pivoting suction nozzle, enabling brushes to float independently on the ground for effective handling of irregular road surfaces and gradients up to 22%.
