WWF ranks Metsä Tissue best on transparency

WWF has published the results of its second WWF Environmental Paper Company Index, a rating of paper producers on their global ecological footprint.

The participating tissue paper producers have allowed WWF to scrutinise their global paper production on key environmental criteria, such as fibre sourcing from sustainably managed forests, clean production and public reporting.
WWF ranked Metsä Tissue - part of the Metsä Group - best in the category of public corporate responsibility reporting and environmental management systems. Metsä Tissue achieved an impressive result of 86% of the maximum score in this category. The second best tissue producer scored 78%.

The three best overall scores in the tissue category, all within a margin of less than 1% from each other, went to SCA Tissue, Metsä Tissue and Sofidel in that particular order.

“This excellent ranking is rewarding and highly motivating for the entire Metsä Tissue community, as a lot of attention and work has been put into improving our transparency and environmental performance,” said Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Tissue.

Emmanuelle Neyroumande, manager of WWF International’s global pulp and paper work, said: “WWF applauds the transparency of the participating producers. By allowing evaluation of their environmental performance, Metsä Tissue is showing that they take environmental and social responsibility issues seriously.”

Nilfisk dealers celebrate new strategy

Nilfisk has announced a major change to its’ indirect sales structure in the UK. Dan Skeates, formally regional sales manager, has been appointed to the position of dealer sales manager and assumes responsibility for the national dealer network across the UK and Northern Ireland. This strategic change will see a national focus on partnerships with the UK-wide dealer network, facilitating future growth for all parties.

The new initiative kick starts with a 22 strong product training trip to the Nilfisk training centre at Guardamiglio in Italy. The purpose built training school will host full product training on all floorcare equipment and outdoor machines including the recently acquired Egholm and Jungojet range of grounds maintenance and utility machinery.

Dan Skeates said: “We have enjoyed good growth in our dealer sales over recent years but within this it has become clear that the needs of our dealers are substantially different from that of our direct customers. In order to best deliver against their expectations we need to focus specifically on the elements that will enable us both to flourish. Individual, one to one management attention is key to this and I have been delighted by how well this information has been received. I very much look forward to meeting the challenges that the future presents.”

The recent addition of grounds maintenance and utility vehicles into the Nilfisk range provides an avenue for dealers to expand or develop their current business into new sectors. The cost effective Nilfisk- Egholm machines have the benefit of combined function - sold with anything up to 13 different attachments, the units undertake year round tasks such as green areas, winter maintenance and road sweeping.

Miele shortlisted in the New Energy Awards

Miele Professional has been named as a finalist in the New Energy Awards for its innovative heat-pump drying technology which can reduce electricity consumption by up to 60% when compared with a conventional condenser dryer. Now in its fourth year, the New Energy Awards recognise and reward only the best individuals and companies committed to alternative sources of energy.

Miele has been shortlisted for the development of its heat pump technology. This energy saving technology features a closed circuit - hot, moisture-laden air from the dryer is passed through the heat-pump where is it cooled and dehumidified through condensation in a heat exchanger. The air then proceeds through a second heat exchanger, where it is re-heated before it is passed through the drum. The closed air circuit obviates the need for vent ducting, which can reduce the expense of installation.

"We are thrilled to have been selected as a finalist in the New Energy Awards 2012,” said Les Marshall, Miele Professional's sales and marketing director. “Miele takes pride in being recognised for its environmental work, and these products exemplify our ongoing commitment to developing methods that enhance both reliability and efficiency."

Cleaning company sets shining example

The manager of a support services company responsible for keeping the new Sainsbury’s store in Irvine pristine has given bright futures to 15 previously unemployed local people, having enlisted the help of Ingeus, the company responsible for finding him work back in 2010.

Paul Edgar, a site manager for contract cleaner Interserve, turned to local work programme provider Ingeus having had first-hand experience of being unemployed. After a management career in IT ended, and while recovering from throat cancer, Edgar was out of work for over a year.

Supported by Ingeus, he began work for Interserve 18 months ago and hasn’t looked back since. He is a manager at the company, which maintains 275 Sainsbury’s across the UK, and was responsible for recruiting the cleaning crew for the new £20 million Irvine superstore - Sainsbury’s 1000th UK store.

“Having been in the situation myself, I knew Ingeus could provide motivated, experienced applicants,” said Edgar. “Interserve recognises the need to give real career opportunities to local, unemployed people and Ingeus provided quality candidates suited to our vacancies, all free of charge. I can certainly recommend working with Ingeus, both as a jobseeker and now as an employer.”

Ingeus delivers the government’s ‘work programme’ across Scotland. It offers a free service to employers, providing unemployed applicants for vacancies. By fully understanding an employer’s requirements, only appropriate clients are put forward, saving valuable time and money. Having helped recruit almost 30 staff for Interserve at other stores across Ayrshire, Ingeus was able to provide a manageable number of applicants at short notice to fill the Irvine vacancies.

Ingeus’ Michelle Magee not only suggested appropriate clients to interview, but held information sessions to provide more information on the jobs, following up with briefings to all those who were successful. The entire cleaning team was recruited via Ingeus, including supervisory positions.
