CSSA publishes Driver Safety factsheet
Cleaning contractors urged to assess their driving activities and to act to minimise the risk to drivers.
The CSSA has published a new health and safety factsheet aimed at improving the safety of drivers in the cleaning and support services sector.Overall, driving a vehicle is almost certainly the most dangerous thing that a cleaning employee will do in his or her working life. To put things into perspective, work related driving incidents account for over 20 deaths and 250 serious injuries every week.
Every year there are over 3000 fatalities on the road in the UK. Of these, around 600 deaths are due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel. Put another way, if you drive over 30,000 miles per year, you have a 1 in 200 chance of having a serious accident. Driver safety is therefore an extremely serious issue for all businesses that use vehicles. That means it is a serious issue for all cleaning companies.
CSSA chief executive Andrew Large said: “The CSSA is delighted to publish this factsheet on safer driving. We think it is important that we advise our members on key hazards in the workplace.
I would encourage all cleaning contractors to assess their driving activities and to act to minimise the risk to drivers, passengers and the general public.”
